Benefit for BJ Gearheart
Most of us have that friend that we reach out to when we need a hand doing something that we just can’t do on our own. Whether you’re moving a piece of furniture, fixing something on your car, or a water leak at 2:00 am...You call this person because you know they will drop whatever they are doing to come help with no questions asked.
For a lot of us around our Steorts Home Design family, that person is BJ Gearheart. And, there is no doubt that he does the same for anyone he knows because that’s just the way he is. He puts everyone else first and will go that extra mile for anyone he knows.
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, BJ (48 years old) had two strokes. He was home alone late Saturday night when he went down. He awoke and realized what had happened and had no movement on the entire left side of his body. He couldn’t move his arm or his leg, and his speech was very slurred. He reached into his pocket for his cell phone to call 911, and the battery was dead. It took over four hours for him to drag himself across the floor to get to a charger and call 911 for an ambulance to get him to the hospital.
BJ is making progress. We were able to get him Medicare through the help of friends at the hospital. This will help with his hospital stay and rehab because, like most in our construction profession he does not have insurance. His speech is 90% better, he is joking with all the nurses and giving them a hard time. His leg is moving (80%) and, with some help, he is up walking. His arm is just starting to move and is scheduled to be in rehab until Dec. 7 with the intent that he can care for himself enough to go home. Afterward he will probably receive some in home care and continue rehab. It will likely be several more weeks until he is back to normal.
We are hoping to raise a little money for BJ to help with his day to day expenses and the many other cost he will incur. He will likely need a wheelchair in the short term and other rehabilitation devices. We have set up a Venmo account in his name and we would appreciate any help that you can contribute. It is driving him nuts to be in the hospital and wants to get back to work as soon as possible.
Feel free to reach out to BJ by text or call at 304-541-6066 or stop by the hospital to see him. He’s at CAMC General on the second floor room 221. Im sure he’ll love to see you and probably have a joke or two for you. Thanks so much for your help!
